Vacations out to sea which were once regarded as a luxury excursion seem to have now lost their luster, thanks to Carnival Cruise Lines.
That's because for the second time in one week... ANOTHER Carnival ship has experienced problems during a cruise, cutting thousands of vacationers' trip a bit short.
ABC reports that the Carnival Legend, which was lingering off the coast of Honduras on Thursday night, has been unable to sail at optimal speed because of a "technical problem."
Passengers aboard the Carnival Legend were supposed to be visiting Grand Cayman Island today, but the stop at that port of call was cancelled so the ship could ease its way back to its home port of Tampa, Florida.
Meanwhile... just 1,500 miles away passengers on board the Carnival Dream ship are being FLOWN home instead of continuing with the remainder of their journey at sea. Their cruise was cut short as well this week, because the Dream stalled at a dock in St. Maarten on Wednesday with what was reported to be a "mechanical problem."
Now with all that being said... this is where the PR Whores firmly believe that Carnival Cruise Lines may need some Online Reputation Management to bounce back from "shippy" situation (pun intended).
Here are 3 major topics which would definitely need some work, considering all the negative press Carnival is receiving from the media across the globe:
1) A Not-So-Splendid Bathroom Situation. In a previous (yet recent) cruise "nightmare" thousands of passengers aboard the Carnival Splendor were stranded for EIGHT days at sea because of a ship engine fire... and they were forced to float at high seas in the dark without food or power, much less working bathrooms. The most horrific stories being told by passengers are those which include the broken restroom facilities, the stench of rotten food & being fed mayo sandwiches for days on end. Online Reputation Management efforts in this type of dilemma couldn't do anything but HELP Carnival Cruise Lines at this point. As strong content writers in the public relations industry the PR Whores would execute several aggressive campaigns highlighting the glamour, the smorgasbord of food & pampered treatment passengers typically experience from cruise ship vacations. We would also launch several press releases, videos and marketing strategies focusing on the beauty of Carnival's designated ports of call and the thousands of tourist attractions & activities available upon arrival at each destination. All this could be done order to suppress (as quickly as possible) all the bad publicity about these last few vacation debacles.
2) Spam, Cold Showers & Frustration. As the media continues to circulate "new findings" from each cruise ship dilemma and its ongoing investigations, more and more passenger stories are emerging which, of course, are not painting Carnival Cruise Lines as a whole in a good light. The biggest advantage of Online Reputation Management is that Negative PR Management Firms like ours are solely dedicated to defending and protecting the image of a company or individual. So while passengers keep mentioning tidbits of information like choking down cans of spam, taking cold showers in the dark, and surviving off of Pop Tarts until they reached land, the PR Whores in this type of crisis would bring all the positive attributes of Carnival Cruise Lines to light... Like the fact that 4.5 million people take a Carnival cruise each year. There has to be at LEAST a few million vacationers out there who have something wonderful to say about their journeys at sea. If they could provide us with great testimonials, we would promptly be able to counter this traumatizing situation with rave reviews in conjunction with other positive PR efforts.
3) Fear of Taking a Cruise in the Future. This happens all the time after deadly plane crashes occur. The general public instantaneously becomes mortified at the thought of leaving the ground even with their own two feet, and airline companies suffer as a result of an alleged uncontrollable (not to mention fatal) situation. In the next year, Carnival Cruise Lines is at serious risk of losing business because of this recent string vacation mishaps. If the media continues to broadcast passenger accounts of their cruise-gone-awry experiences, Carnival's reputation both off and online will resemble one of their malfunctioning sea vessels... STRANDED WITHOUT ANY POWER.
So let's just put it this way... Unfortunate events occur for many companies as well as people at some point in time. The idea though, is to find the silver lining in that negative moment, and exploit the hell out of it. And that, my friends, is what Carnival Cruise Lines may want to start looking into sooner than later... before their profits sink below sea level.
When "ship" happens, Online Reputation Management can help.
